Overthinking sucks! It keeps you awake at night; it keeps you analyzing small events and thinking of the worst-case scenarios even with no firm basis. Speaking from own experiences, overthinking can be detrimental to someone’s physical and mental health.
You need to figure out how to remove negative thoughts out of your head if you want to have a better relationship with yourself or other people. And here’s how you can do that:
Get to the root cause of your negative thoughts
It is easier to address a problem when you know what causes it. It is more likely that you develop obsessing about your every thought due to different traumatic or stressful situations in your life. You can remove negative thoughts out of your mind if you learn to put a boundary between the past and the future.
But you might be wondering why all your negative thoughts seem to happen in your reality? You are not alone at this. Our thoughts are powerful. We are always attracting what we think about. And, it could be amazing or frightening depending on what thoughts you are planting in your head.
Understanding your negative thoughts can give you a chance to know if you’ll need to take action or just let it be. How are your negative thoughts triggered? Could it be the result of something you need to heal from the past?
Remove negative thoughts by journaling
If you don’t want to bother other people with your extreme overthinking, you can grab a pen and paper instead. I highly commend the power of journaling and how it helps me get negative thoughts out of my mind. The thing about journaling is, you just need to dump all thoughts in the paper without any care. You can use journaling by channeling all thoughts as they come and converting them to words.
The best thing about journaling it can offer you genuine acceptance. Journaling is a great way to pour your thoughts, even the embarrassing ones, without the fear of being judged.

Channeling your thoughts into something productive or creative
Channeling your thoughts can be an effective way to stop thinking of the things that bother you. Instead, try doing things you enjoy or some things you’re putting aside for a long time. Enroll in an online class to hone your skills, read a good book, take action on your passion project. Doing what you enjoy, loved, or something that can improve your life will surely motivate you.
At the end of the day, the negative thoughts will not seem as important as you think it is. However, distracting yourself is temporary. So, if you believe that you need to address your negative thoughts, you should not avoid doing so. But it would be best if you took action on your negative thoughts with a clear mind. If distracting yourself now can help you handle your thoughts more intelligently later, you can have a go at it.
Learn to let go of wanting to control everything
One thing I notice with myself is the misconception that overthinking some things or situations can change it. I often find myself thinking of things that had happened in the past, feeling as if I can change what I’ve said or done when I overanalyze it in my head. Instead, we should make it a habit to think about what power we have over our bad thoughts.
Can we really do something about it? Can we really change something or the outcome by overthinking things? Most likely, thinking of past events over and over again will give us little to no help in our present. And if that’s the reason we keep negative thoughts from running inside our minds, then we are already defeated.
We need to let go of our expectations and the beliefs that we can control everything. We can now make better decisions based on the lessons we have learned from our previous experiences.
Confide to a friend or loved ones
You are lucky if you have friends or loved ones who can truly listen to you and help you analyze your nagging thoughts. Sharing what you’re thinking about with cherished friends or loved ones will immediately make you feel less burdened by your thoughts. Simply having someone to listen to you without feeling judged or undermined is an amazing privilege.
Remove negative thoughts out of your head by focusing on gratitude
You can never go wrong with practicing gratitude, especially when you find it harder to get rid of negative thoughts using other ways mentioned in this blog. Expressing gratitude have the power to shift your energy immediately. Simply thinking of one or a few things that you’re thankful for is already helpful and calming.
It is incredible to see and feel that despite all the seemingly negative effects of our bad thoughts, simple shifts will allow us to realize how lucky we are. No matter how small those things may be, it is helpful to stop focusing on the bad stuff and recognize the good things in your life.
Final thoughts
Our thoughts are more powerful than we realize. Thoughts can manifest in our reality, like how the things we see and use today started out as a thought. Negative thoughts can make us feel unhappy and snatch our chance to have a better life.
If you notice that bad thoughts continuously live inside your mind, it’s about time to do something about it. Let’s not wait for it to manifest horrible things in our life and take action to watch out where our minds wander from time to time.
